Saving Money on Greeting Cards

Are you always running to the store to buy a Birthday card or a Sympathy card or a Get-Well card? The price of a greeting card is ridiculous for something someone is just going to eventually throw out. Here is an idea that will eventually save you time and money.

At the beginning of each year, I sit down and make a list of everyone’s birthday and anniversary. Then make a list of any weddings that are coming up. Do not forget to add Mother’s Day and Father’s Day too!

The next time that I go to the dollar store I stock up on cards. They are two for $1. Which is much cheaper than the $4.99 or more at the grocery store of card store. I always purchase a few Sympathy and Get-Well cards too.

When I get home a have a little organizer that I got at the Dollar Store (surprise) and use index cards (Dollar Store) to separate the months of the year. I then put the birthday/anniversary cards together for each month…

February is the busiest month of the year for cards for me. Starts out with my college roommate’s Birthday, my mom’s Birthday, my parents Anniversary, Valentine’s Day card for my husband, the boy’s Birthday, etc. I have all of them in one section together so at the beginning of the month, I can either mail out or have ready for that event.

When you find out that someone is have a baby shower, I get the baby shower card and purchase congratulations on new baby card. That way I will not have to run back and forth to the Dollar Store.

Now, occasionally, I will admit that I do get a card at the grocery store. (For convenience.)  But I go to the $.99 card section and purchase one from there.

Think about it. If you spend an average of $5 per card (which is quite easy to do.) and have ten cards per year…that would be $50 going to purchasing cards that most people just throw out. Or would you rather spend just $5 for all ten of them? Your choice. I know what I would choose.

You could always go one step further and make a card on your computer. You would still need to purchase card stock (and do not forget to count in the price of ink) and it would take time to make a card. I find it to be worth the .50 a card to buy it at the Dollar Store.
